Chapter X. Designing Organizations for Computational Agents

چکیده

Organizing is important in computational systems, just as it is important in human systems. Organizational knowledge allows a computational system to recognize its role, and the roles of others, in accomplishing collective goals. However, as circumstances change, often organizational structures must change also. It is therefore important to understand how different organizations can be designed for different populations of agents, performing different tasks in changing environments, to meet various performance goals. Our work has been directed toward understanding this design space, and characterizing the effectiveness of different organizations. In this paper, we describe a framework for understanding organization design for computational agents, use our framework for analyzing the expected performance of a class of organizations, and describe how our analyses can be applied to predict performance for a distributed information gathering task. Our ongoing work includes making organizational design an inherent part of a multiagent system, rather than something done by an external designer.

Designing tree-structured organizations for computational agents

We describe a framework for defining the space of organization designs for computational agents, use our framework for analyzing the expected performance of a class of organizations, and describe how our analyses can be applied to predict performance for a distributed information gathering task. Our analysis specifically addresses the impact of the span of control (branching factor) in tree-str...

Organizational Self-Design in Worth-Oriented Domains

This chapter presents an approach to organizational-self design (OSD), a method of designing organizations at run-time in which the agents are responsible for generating their own organizational structures. OSD is especially suitable for environments that are dynamic, albeit slowly changing. Such environments preclude the use of static, design-time generated, organizational structures, and yet ...

Task Environment Centered Simulation

The design of organizations or other coordination mechanisms for groups of agents depends in many ways on the agent’s task environment. Two of these dependencies are on the structure of the tasks and on the uncertainty in the task structures. The task structure includes the scope of the problems facing the agents, the complexity of the choices facing the agents, and the the particular kinds and...

Norm-based agency for designing collaborative information systems

Information systems are organizations in which signs are created, processed and consumed. In order to fulfil the organizational goals and objectives, its members must understand their responsibilities and authorities, and must act co-operatively. The key to this organization and co-ordination lies in norms, which define responsibilities and authorities for each human agent, and establish regula...
